Sportsmanship Award Ceremony and All Star Game

Hey Gang,

It's the season that won't end, isn't it?

Our presence has been requested on Wednesday night at McCambridge #2 for the 5/6 All Star Game. Please be there by 6:00 p.m. in FULL UNIFORM.

As most of you know, we were announced as the 5/6 Burbank Hap Minor Sportsmanship Award Recipients at Civitan Day. They do a presentation at the All Star game. To me, this means a lot. This is voted upon by our league peers as well as league officials, park staff, etc. You parents are a HUGE part of this award.

I had a discussion with Tom Ryan, who coaches the Cubs, and he told me that he had to have two drunk parents removed from their final game. I cannot thank you enough for the good decisions you make as "fans" and baseball parents. And I think you all know that I'd have you doing push-ups in the stands for misbehaving anyway ;-)

Sincerely, thank you, and I hope to see you on Wednesday if you're in town and available to attend. If you're out...we'll hope to see you sooner than later!

The All Star game will follow our presentation.

Civitan Day and Pictures

OK, Gang.

Our PHOTO OP:

Saturday morning, let's gather at 8:00 a.m. on the Clarke Avenue side of George Izay Park/Olive Park, by the "stadium" to take some fun shots. HERE IS A MAP

Henry Tovmassian will be there with his camera, and I promise to do a better job distributing photos this season -- this will also offer you an opportunity to get a few great shots of your own!

Once we conclude the quick photo session, we can warm up, as the fields become ineffective for getting ready to compete once EVERY TEAM from K-6 shows up following the parade...which yes, we're skipping this year.

If you all remember last year, it drizzled all morning, and made for a pretty miserable day. At present the forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, a high of 74, and a max. humidity of 63% - only a 10% chance of precip. What does that mean? A made-to-order day for some Gashousers to take home some hardware!

Parents, the stadium bleachers are canopied, but you may wanna bring some sunscreen.

I'm off to the park office to see if I can snag a field for tomorrow. If not, I'll be in touch about some cages, or whiffle ball action.

Friday June 4, Game Information

I couldn't wrangle a field for yesterday or today, so I'll hope that everyone will get some cage time in, and come ready to roll tomorrow night.

We play @ 7:45 vs. the Padres at McCambridge #1. We are the home team, and will be on the 3rd base side. PLEASE, be there no later than 7:00 so we can get a good pre-game warm up in, and hit the field with our brains set to "on" at 7:45.

As it stands, we'll be playing 9. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we're down Vicken and Jacob for the game? If that's correct, I'll get the line-up out to everyone later today. Looking forward to finishing the season strong!!

2nd Half Game Schedule

Nice win on Monday, Gang.

We'll be in action again next Monday, and the subsequent evenings listed below. We've got a nice break around Memorial Day, and then we'll finish it out strong. Hopefully we'll be able to play for the American Division Championship, and get an extra game in this season! If we work hard, and play focused, there's no doubt in my mind - it is an attainable goal.

Monday May 17th - 7:45 p.m. @ McCambridge #1 vs. Thunderhawks (Home)

Monday May 24th - 7:45 p.m. @ McCambridge #2 vs. Phillies (Away)

Friday June 4th - 7:45 p.m. @ McCambridge #1 vs. Padres (Home)

Tuesday June 8th - 7:45 p.m. @ McCambridge #2 vs. Civitan Pirates (Away)

Playoffs will be the following week: June 14-18th, with Civitan Day taking place on Saturday, June 19th. We're gonna skip the parade this year, gang, and just meet at the field to compete and collect some hardware. Hope everyone is cool with that. Details TBA.

A New Direction

Win or lose, Greg and I are thrilled so long as we offer our best effort. Right now, we're coming and going in waves. An ebb and flow of sorts.

What we need is an overwhelming tsunami...occurring at high-tide--some passion--chatting baseball instead of school gossip, etc. We need our silent-types to start getting vocal, letting their teammates and coaches know what they need and want!!

We need our leaders to ALWAYS lead by example, and quickly offer POSITIVE influence to those who are working toward higher levels.

We've been pretty lenient with people approaching certain aspects of the game with their own style, but we've got to display more discipline as a unit. So, that's going to change. Again, we're coming and going in waves. This doesn't apply to everyone, but as a team, we are ONE. As far as I'm concerned, it applies to everyone, including me.

It would be easy for us to say, "We don't care, we'll come out, throw the ball around, maybe get lucky on occasion," but ultimately, that's not the way life works. No measure of success, even in the world of volunteer work, will result from such an attitude.

SO. Come Sunday. Welcome to the high school baseball team, formerly know as the gas house gang...now known as the GAS HOUSE GANG!

1. NO CELL PHONES at practice. If you need your phone for a ride, it stays with me until practice is over. Otherwise, leave it at home. If Greg and I don't need a phone at practice, you guys don't need a phone at practice.

2. TEAM HAT at practice. We're gonna start looking like a team every time we get together. If it needs to be washed, just hand wash it in the sink with a light detergent in cold salt-water, rinsing it out with cold water. That'll help lock the colors in. Yeah, I'm that domesticated.

3. A NEW SKILL at every practice. At every practice, everyone will display a skill that they learned, something they are working on, or something they have improved upon during their own, personal practice or play time. Yes. Just like show and tell. It can be a rule about the game. A play that would be made in a certain situation. You name it. If it leads to improvement and game knowledge, it's good stuff! This will allow us to generate some more personal interest in the game, as well as dig into finite aspects of baseball.

4. DAILY GOALS - We will all announce our goals for the team, our individual goals, and a goal for the day. This will happen in conjunction with show and tell at every practice. During this period, there will be absolutely NO TALKING, other than the individual who has "the field" for speaking.

Oh. I just got excited.

Thursday Practice

Hey Gang!!

I took what was available. I know it won't work for a lot of people, but the next opportunity to meet:

Thursday, 4/1 5:00 p.m. @ Pacific Park. We'll work from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. No, this is not an April Fool's joke. I will be there by 4:30.

If you need some transport, let me know and we can get something figured out.

Sunday's practice was very encouraging! Greg and I are seeing progress by everyone. Keep up the hard work, and remember that we're a team. Once we realize that we need to play together and communicate, we'll all be able to do our jobs a little more efficiently.

I don't know when it's going to rain tomorrow, but it's going to rain...I feel it in my joints.

Here is a more refined schedule:

Tues. 2/23: 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Pitchers and Catchers ONLY - Burbank High School Track/Field

OR if you're in the Burbank Hills - East/Southeast on Kenneth toward Glendale. Right on Spazier - turn into back parking lot.)

Sun. 2/28: 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. - McCambridge Field #1

Tues. 3/2: 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. - Pacific Park MAP

Everyone - There are batting cages at a couple different locations in town. GET TO THEM ON YOUR OWN TIME!!! Remember what we talked about - Proper bat grip. Here are some great videos:

In this video, you'll notice how Pujols is bringing his load stride IN - he's working toward right field - don't worry about that - we'll get to it later in the year. What I want you to focus on are his front shoulder staying closed and pointed toward the ball, his hips and then his hands coming into the strike zone BEFORE the bat head!!!

2010 - Here We Go Again!!!

It's going to be a fun year! Challenges ahead, and hard work to enjoy!!!

More details to come, and information on practice, as well as league fees, etc. in the upcoming days/weeks...

If anyone knows of businesses that have done exceptionally well during this down, economic time, it's always awesome to have some sponsorship. We'll do them proud on the field!

A quick season overview:

February 9th - Organizational Meeting

March 1st - Practice Rounds Begin

March 29th - League Games Begin

June 12th - Civitan Day

The bump makes it an early start, but I think we'll all be thrilled knowing we won't have to be on the field approaching July.
